Why Swedes keep choosing the Costa del Sol

By Marie Segerholm · Published

It is rarely about the sun first. When I talk to Swedish buyers, they describe everyday life – the walk to the bakery, golf in November, grandchildren who can fly direct.

The Costa del Sol has something unusual: a long coast where every town has its own pace. Fuengirola with Swedish services around the corner, Estepona with its old town, Nueva Andalucía with the golf valley. Buyers choose not just a home but a way of life.

Finding homes is not the hard part

Supply is plentiful. The hard part is knowing which area fits, and which agent to trust in a country where the profession is not regulated as at home. That is why we always start with the area – and only then the listings.

My advice

Stay a few weeks in the area before deciding, ideally off-season. And always use an independent Spanish lawyer with no ties to the seller.
